Description This article considers the problems of formation and development of the Third-age universities for
elderly people in Ukraine. The paper presents the results of the qualitative research of the Third-age
universities’ activities, in conducting which we used the method of document analysis, case study, semistructured
interview, and participant observation. The analysis considered the information about the Thirdage
universities provided on the web-pages of the Territorial centers, local administrations, and
nongovernment organizations. The functioning of the Third-age University of the Shevchenkivskyi District’s
Territorial Center In Kyiv was studied in detail, applying participant observation and interviewing the
students of the university, the employees of the center, and the teachers.
Apart from that, the article analyses the regulatory and legal framework of the Third-age universities,
specifically, the procedure of receiving references for studying. The key role in producing these references
belongs to doctors, since studying is viewed as one of the social services provided to the clients of the
territorial centers and, accordingly, to receive such a service one needs a full packet of documents including
health certificates, the main aim of which is to ensure the lack of resources and opportunities for selfservice.
The last point is not very relevant for those willing to study; however, in practice, the stated demands
create a number of obstacles for them, especially, if they have mental or physical problems.
The article also examines special features of the organization of the Third-age universities, their structure
and teaching methods, the experiences of particular universities, the difficulties in their operation, and the
coping strategies. The authors come to the conclusion that the Third-age universities’ services are popular.
Since the time of creating the base for their functioning, the number of such projects has constantly been
increasing. Most of these universities function within the territorial centers for providing social services;
however, the projects based in governmental and private universities and nongovernmental organizations
have also been developing. Moreover, the Third-age universities themselves can be independent NGOs.
Almost all the teachers in the Third-age universities are volunteers, who usually also happen to be elderly
people. Unfortunately, they sometimes lack the necessary knowledge about the specifics of teaching elderly
people and the necessary resources, for example, some didactic materials or special equipment for ensuring
a successful learning process. The lack of teachers’ motivation and support is also an issue which often
stands in a way of continuing teaching and improving it.
