The present time anthropogenic pressure in the Carpathian region reached its critical limits. Because of progressing destruction of forests, poaching, industrial pollution, intensification of agriculture, development of tourism, expansion of region's transport network and other adverse factors of economic activities, now serious threats to the unique diversity of the Carpathians and disruption of the whole mountain ecosystem are observed. The situation can became further complicated as will no effective measures, including the legal mechanism for uniting efforts of all Carpathian countries with the purpose of strengthening the co-operation in the field of preservation and sustainable use of the Carpathians.The basic instrument for these goals is Carpathian Eco-Net, the conceptual aspects of it is considered and algorithm of next steps proposed.
В основі теорії та практики екомережі лежить здатність природних систем до підтримання стаціонарної нерівноваги, саморегуляції, активного і адаптивного відновлення та розвитку, забезпечення екосистемних функцій. Це пов'язано з екосферною роллю біоти, насамперед її фітокомпоненти, здатної виробляти органічну речовину, що виступає базисною щодо розвитку життя та суспільства на планеті. Базисність полягає, окрім участі в перенесенні і трансформації речовини, енергії та інформації, в освоєнні простору, формуванні та підтриманні градієнтів умов довкілля. Регіоном, який може стати пілотним для повноцінного втілення ідеї екомережі, є Карпати, і успіх такого втілення означатиме також успішність місцевих людей і збереження природного довкілля на значній частині Європи, оскільки йдеться про підтримання «биття» «зеленого серця» Європи.
