The main practical goal of oceanographic and hydrographic research is to ensure safety and improve the efficiency of surface and underwater navigation, the use of biological, mineral and energy resources of water and the sea floor, and the improvement of weather forecasting methods. Державна установа "Держгідрографія" Міністерства інфраструктури України виконує функції національної гідрографічної служби в Україні та підтримує майже всі види діяльності, пов’язані з морем: безпека судноплавства, захист морського середовища, розвиток національної інфраструктури, управління прибережною зоною, морські дослідження, експлуатація морських ресурсів, делімітація морських кордонів, морська оборона і безпека держави. Головна практична мета океанографічних і гідрографічних досліджень – забезпечення безпеки і підвищення ефективності надводного й підводного мореплавства, використання біологічних, мінеральних та енергетичних ресурсів вод і дна моря, удосконалення методів прогнозу погоди.
