Three stages are allocated for the national oceanography activity and institutional structure changes concerning physical and ecological studies of marine environment. State and problems of the system of marine hydrometeorological observations and marine coastal zone monitoring are described. Ways of accumulated problems solution are drawn and possible directions of oceanography and marine hydrometeorology development are proposed. Розглянуто новітню історію морських досліджень в Україні від здобуття незалежності до цього часу. Виокремлено три етапи діяльності та зміни інституційної структури вітчизняної океанографії з питань вивчення фізичних та екологічних процесів у морському довкіллі. Описано стан і проблеми системи морських гідрометеорологічних спостережень і моніторингу прибережної смуги морів. Накреслено шляхи розв’язання накопичених проблем і запропоновано можливі напрями розвитку океанографії та гідрометеорології морів.
