Description The paper presents an analysis of the luminescent properties of Ce3+-doped calcium hydroxyapatite
(Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, HAp) nanopowders prepared by the chemical precipitation and sol-gel method. It was
shown that in nanoscale HAp Ce3+ ions are strongly perturbed by surface defects and their local symmetry
differs from that of Ce3+ ions in the bulk crystals. Possible origin of defects in nanosized HAp is also discussed.
