The study aims to investigate the impact of Emily Dickinson’s love poetry on certain cultural beliefs in Ukraine and Brazil. Our initial hypothesis was that Humanities’ students ARE influenced by poetry, as they are constantly exposed to written texts. Nevertheless we anticipated that cultural stereotypes would be stronger than the force of identification with the author. The participants of the project answered questions before and after reading a poem by Dickinson in which intimate relations were associated with colours and ranked their emotional attitude to love as such. As the investigation was carried out in two countries presumably different in their national traditions and mentality, the results also enabled us to investigate cultural differences between Ukrainian and Brazilian reception of poetry.
Статтю присвячено вивченню впливу інтимної лірики Емілі Дікінсон на певні культурні вірування України та Бразилії. Наша робоча гіпотеза полягала у тому, що студенти мовних спеціальностей перебувають під впливом поезії, адже вони постійно зустрічаються із писемними текстами. Втім ми очікували, що культурні стереотипи будуть сильнішими за силу ідентифікації із автором. Учасники проекту відповідали на запитання до та після прочитання вірша Дікінсон, у якому особисті стосунки імпліцитно асоціювалися із кольорами, та оцінювали власне емоційне ставлення до кохання як такого. Оскільки дослідження проводилося у двох країнах, різних за своїми традиціями та ментальністю, результати також дозволили нам зробити висновки щодо культурних відмінностей між українським та бразильським сприйняттям поезії. |
