A quelles conditions peutVon être, pleinement et sans réserves, à la fois catholique, protestant, juif ou musulman, d’une part et Français d’autre part? Le cérémonial de la vie privée et celui de la vie publique changent. N’exprimentVils point une nouvelle attention donnée à la personne, dans sa singularité, et non plus seulement à la personne comme sujet de droits? Comment se mettent en place, sur le territoire français, des cercles d’appartenance de mieux en mieux distingués, ceux de la ville, du «pays», de la région, de la nation, de l’Europe? Comment articuler, dans la conjoncture actuelle de mondialisation, les valeurs que l’Occident libéral et humaniste tend à universaliser, d’une part, et les valeurs culturelles différentes des communautés installées sur le territoire national, d’autre part? Comment comprendre l’instrumentalisation des signes qui marquent les territoires et les lieux, et qui génèrent du mythе?
A historian and an ethnologist dialog freely with each other, each speaking according to a process proper to his own discipline, on the formation of identites and citizenship. Under which conditions can one be both a Catholic, Protestant, Jew or Mohammedan and a Frenchman? The ceremonials of private and public life are changing. Do they not reveal the new attention paid to the individual in his singularity rather than to the person subject of rights? How do the more and more specific spheres of belonging to town, «land», region, nation, Europe, develop on the French territory? Under the present circumstances of globalization, how can one articulate the values that the liberal and humanist West tries to universalize with the different cultural values of communities settled on the national territory? How to understand instrumentalization of signs which marks territories and places and generates myth? |
