На сучасному етапі професійна педагогічна освіта у ФРН характеризується домінуванням компетентнісного підходу до підготовки вчителів, що зафіксовано як на федеративному, так і на міжнародному рівнях: проект "Налагодження освітніх структур" (2003 р.), рамкові угоди (2007-2010 рр.) Конференції Міністрів освіти федеративних земель, "Орієнтовні рамки освітньої підготовки в умовах глобального розвитку" (2007 р.) і т.д.. Завданнями цих документів є: визначення точок конвергенції і вироблення загального розуміння змісту кваліфікацій за рівнями в термінах компетенцій та результатів навчання; окреслення компетентнісної моделі як шкільної, так і професійної педагогічної освіти; визначення структури компетентнісної підготовки вчителів.
