Текст розглядається як комунікативний продукт-носій індивідуальної семантики свого творця. У дослідженому оповіданні визначаються у повному складі дієслівні форми як провідні для семантики англомовного тексту. Досягнута панорама свідчить про випадок незвичайно активної «інфінітивності» під пером британського автора, який, загалом, не відрізняється прихильністю до такого письма. На семантичні можливості неозначеної форми нерідко зауважують англомовні функціональні граматисти, відповідні текстові смисли підтверджуються в проаналізованому матеріалі супровідним використанням модальних дієслів, що своєю чергою нагнітають текстову атмосферу вимушеної «упевненості» та «рішучості». (The text is regarded as a communicative product and receptacle of the author’s individual semantics. English verbal forms are known to be decisive elements in the flow of content in a piece of writing. Therefore, their complete presence in the text is calculated. The general picture shows the unusually active infinitival function, but it is hardly the permanent feature of this author’s writing. English-speaking functional grammarians explain the semantic potential of infinitival usages. The amount of specific meaning from this verbal form in the studied text is supported by the range of modals’ usages that add to the impressive general atmosphere of intense tragic purposiveness and determination. The linguistic studies of the given text should be continued with regard the function of frequent Past Perfect forms that we expect add even more (with its definiteness and finality) to the textual semantics created by the former linguistic mechanisms.
