| Description |
The present paper studies how discourse of ageing is represented in American drama, particularly in Tina Howe’s recent collection of plays. Markers of ageing as well as portrayals of the elderly in three comedies Birth and After Birth, Approaching Zanzibar and Rembrandt’s Gift are analyzed. The dramatist’s individual manner of using binary opposition of late adulthood/early childhood to demonstrate social and emotional development of ageing in the analyzed plays is detected. There is a considerable emphasis on erotic and thanatic interaction in lives of characters in Approaching Zanzibar and Rembrandt’s Gift.
