Description The subject of the paper is twofold: to discuss the age awareness as a meaningful element in plays of US women dramatists in the context of their non/canonical affiliation. The goal is to trace down the similarity in patterns of ageing dynamics, portrayals of the elderly in plays and poetics of the literary representations of later life as apparent canonicity of the discourse of ageing. The aim of this paper is to study the attitude towards age awareness and particularly ageing in two works of the turn of the century – a noncanonical Marsha Norman’s The Laundromat (1978) and a canonical Margaret Edson’s W;t (1995). The methods used are mixed: historical data processing, analyses of interdisciplinary resources (literary gerontology, social gerontology, age psychology). The innovative solution lies in the application of interdisciplinary approach to close reading of drama texts. The results can be practical for classes of contemporary US drama and literary gerontology.
The findings of the paper inform of the frequent references to age awareness provoked by intergenerational contact between older and younger characters. The binary opposition of older and younger protagonists is one of the most productive in the discourse of ageing observed in a number of other plays by women dramatists. The acts of nursing, dominant in both dramas, reveal close links of death and birth demonstrating integrity of a life cycle. The poetics of ageing represented in the plays‘ chronotopes with either night time or holotropic conditions conveys traditional perception of old age associated with the last phase of human life-span and organically with death. From the standpoint of literary gerontology analyzed dramas demonstrate overt and covert types of age awareness, elaborated portrayals of the elderly and shed light upon such characteristics of later life as coping with the loss of a partner, intergenerational relations, nursing, attitude to death, and ability to change. In terms of the comprehension of modern canonicity it is suggested that the notion of canon may be in line with the philosophy of contemporary university and school.
