The structure of a new optic-electronic distance meter for short distance measurements is considered in the article. A conversion function of the distance into the displacement of the light spot on the photodetector of the distance meter is derived. The theoretical static metrological characteristics of the distance meter are developed. The advantages and disadvantages of the distance meter are analyzed
