Abstract. Introduction. The place of honour among female pioneers of science takes a well-known historian, ethnographer, the first female Doctor of History in the Russian Empire, teacher and public figure Oleksandra Yakivna Efimenko (1848 ─ 1918).
Purpose. In modern Ukrainian historiography, there is no comprehensive work on understanding of the personality of the prominent scholar. The purpose of this article is to study the life and work of O.Ya. Efimenko through psychohistory and gender analysis.
Results. General practice of socialization of a girl in the traditional patrimonial society ─ development of respect and obedience to the elders in a family, keeping Christian commandments, performance of gender-based duties ─ enhanced individual factors of formation of the personality of Oleksandra Yakivna: strict ascetic childhood, innate desire for justice, following the behaviour of her father-clerk with his principal denial of bribery. The axiology of further life motivations of O.Ya. Efimenko was rooted in the honour of suffering for righteous principles.
Natural curiosity, persevering desire to know the world around, combined with thoroughness and conscientiousness, will become a guarantee of excellent education at the gymnasium, and will determine the life credo of the scientist ─ self-improvement and self-cultivation. At the age of 16 the teaching for Oleksandra Yakivna was not only her first step in the pedagogical field, but also the experience of implementing a responsible mission of the supporter of her family - mother, younger brothers and sister. Meeting with political exile Petro Savich Efimenko defined the future of the woman. Subconscious attraction to man-father, mentor and friend, whose advice will be valuable to her throughout her life, laid the foundations of strong feelings of spiritual affinity. She became an assistant in his research studios, and later she became his wife.
A new page in the life and work of O.Ya. Efimenko was opened in 1874, when she together with her husband moved to Ukraine ─ at first to the city of Chernihiv, and in 1879 ─ to the city of Kharkiv. She was an active figure in scientific, cultural, educational and public life of the region, devoting a lot of efforts to study the Ukrainian past. However, her female fulfilment – giving birth and education to five children, making a home feel cosy, establishing family communications in socio-cultural area of Chernihiv and Kharkiv, was no less important for the scientist. The love as the basis of marital life, the love of people as the basis for social orientation of the family, democracy and respect for the individual, identified gender relations in the researchers’ family and helped the scientist to withstand the test of fate with dignity.
Conclusion. Settings for priority of the inner / spiritual over the external / material, formed in her childhood, became the core of the personality of Oleksandra Yakivna. High moral virtues of O.Ya. Efimenko ─ modesty, temperance, diligence, diversity of interests ─ sustain considerable work of the intellectual scientist towards self-understanding, search for and comprehension of the meaning of being, ways of its active implementation.
