Description This article analyzes American and Russian print media coverage of the 2004 presidential election and the Orange Revolution in Ukraine. The New York Times and Izvestia are assessed using a frame analysis. The findings demonstrate that both papers employed a Cold War frame in their coverage. The election was portrayed not as an internal Ukrainian affair, but as a part of the conflict between the West and Russia over spheres of influence. Ukraine itself was depicted as a geopolitical prize. Both newspapers reported favorably about their countries’ allies and negatively about their enemies.
