The article discusses the results of academic performance modeling in the academic course “Statistical Data Analysis,” using several cognitive and non-cognitive predictors: standardized achievement test, expert judgments of intellectual activity by students, expert judgments of intellectual ability and motivation by an independent lecturer, behavior in a real situation (participation in the professional contest), learning styles, team roles, social values, and future career goals. The results show that three predictors (expert judgment of ability, GPA, and participation in the professional contest) explained 52.1 % of variance in academic performance measured by standardized achievement test. These results indicate that behaviors in the real life situations should be used as additional criteria of academic performance. Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) technique allowed to build several alternative models that explained the decision of sociology students to participate in the professional contest. Eight predictors for these models were selected as the necessary but insufficient conditions for the decision to participate. The minimal necessary and sufficient model included five such predictors: specific plans after graduation, pragmatic learning style, desire to demonstrate abilities to others, intellectual activity, and standardized achievement scores higher than average. The evidence suggests that comprehensive description of the academic performance must include instances of external professional behaviors, the peers’ and lecturer’s judgments of intellectual activity and ability, learning styles, and social values. У статті розглянуто результати моделювання академічної успішності за допомогою декількох критеріїв: стандартизованих тестів досягнень, суддівських оцінок, поведінки в реальних ситуаціях. За допомогою методу якісного компаративного аналізу вдалося побудувати альтернативні моделі, які на основі когнітивних, стильових і ціннісних характеристик дають змогу пояснювати прийнят- тя рішення в реальній життєвій ситуації. |
