Abstract | The article focuses on the impact of the ideas of Russian classic writer F. Dostoevsky of the 19th century on the fiction of contemporary American writers. The aim of the research is to define the features of artistic reflection of ideas of F.M. Dostoevsky in the works of J.C. Oates. As the material for comparative analysis the author has chosen F. Dostoevsky’s novel “The Brothers Karamazov” and Joyce Carol Oates’ novel “Assassins”. The author researches the typological parallels between the novels with regard to coverage of specific issues such as life and death, the destruction of the family, the root causes of crime, which are revealed through the images of three brothers’ fates. It is concluded that the allusions to the novel of famous Russian classic writer have become the means of depicting eternal constants of the human psyche and consciousness. Falsity, hypocrisy, cruelty, those features that E.T.A. Hoffman called the “night side of the soul”, in America the 1970s appeared to be in demand by contemporary politics and politicians. Oates’s images are regarded as a kind of sibling to the characters in “The Brothers Karamazov”, which have gained the US dimension and demonstrated the relevance of classical Russian traditions in the new socio-historical time and space and new social environment. One of the components of this tradition, which identified one of the dominant issues in Oates’ fiction is the search of God and related truths, including the meaning of life. |
