The article analyzes the activity of insurers in Russian Empire at late XIX?early XX centuries when insurers were established as joint stock companies that had an undeniable influence on the development of insurance traditions in Ukraine. The main problems of the insurance business, especially the issues of investment activity, government regulation, providing of solvency and avoiding of bankruptcy, were typical for insurance companies that operated at that time. The article describes the foundation of the first Russian insurers, including ?Russian Fire Insurance Company? (1827), ?Life? (1835) and ?Russian Insurance and Transport Company? (1844), and the trends of the insurance industry during the pre-revolutionary period. Based on the primary sources dedicated to the jointstock insurance in 1885-1894, the key indicators of insurance activityhave been analyzed, the profitability ratios (return on revenue, profitability of activity, dividend on equity) have been calculated, and the ranking of insurance companies by total revenue in 1894 and 1910 has been generated. The activity of insurers in the financial market, especially as institutional investors and issuers of securities, and their role in the development of financial system, have not been left without attention. |
