On a cross straight section made from a coated sample microhardness of the coating is determined in depth with an increment corresponding to the cutting depth at layer-by-layer machining the sample. Then the sample is machined layer-by-layer followed by measurement of microhardness of the machined surfaces after each pass. Then the microhardness on thickness of the coating defined on a cross straight section is compared with the microhardness of the surfaces treated layer-by-layer. Then according to the microhardness criterion the value is taken into account of a layer subject to hardening accompanying the process of machining the surfaces located in the upper defective area. Then the allowance is taken, which is equal to the total value of thicknesses of defective layers upstream of the beginning of the quality zone less the layer, which is subject to work hardening during machining. The invention provides increased durability of treated surfaces of products with gas-thermal coatings and decreased allowance value for their machining.
