Abstract The weaker is the bond between the child and his parents, the stronger is the peer group's influence. An attractive peer or a slightly older colleague have a considerable influence on others. They can also form a positive pattern for behaviour modeling, negate destructive group norms or weaken mistaken normative beliefs. Based on this knowledge, attempts are made to influence youth groups through positive leaders. They constitute a great force supporting preventive, cultural and sport activities, implementation of ideas at schools and other outposts or institutions or in the local community.
Positive leaders are often strenghtened by offering them social skills training classes, comprising establishing contacts with people, dealing with difficult situations, understanding themselves and others and helping other people, that is, providing them with support and increasing their effectiveness. Positive leaders are usually less visible, so their impact on the group may be smaller than negative leaders. However, an attractive, positive colleague with a high position in the peer group can successfully challenge destructive norms and introduce positive norms. Social psychology states that it is easier to resist pressure if we have even few allies. Because not all young people identify with imposed norms, opposing them by a positive leader encourages others to similar behaviors.
There are also implemented programms in which youth leaders are acquired for preventive activities, and then they are prepared for the role of a peer counselor.
The School for Youth Leaders project is aimed at activating young people in environments such as: school, institutions, formal and informal groups, street. The project also includes street worker training. The aim is to activate young people and create a positive peer culture in the environments free of violence and drugs.
