Abstract Through the analysis of confessional and official-business texts, the development of pre-Slavic sound combinations *dj, *zdj in the old-Ukrainian literary and written language of XIV – XV centuries was traced. The active interaction of the people-speaking language and the Church Slavonic as the dominant language of the church of the time was confirmed. The main representative of the Proto-Slavic sound combination *dj was due to the written tradition of the digraph жд (нужда, jдождити, рождени, оутвръждени). The dj > ж change that has developed as a result of the influence of live folk speech is widely represented in the north-Ukrainian and south-western Ukrainian sights of different styles (межи, въ одежахъ, прихожю, рожени). Sound combination жч in place of жд is recorded in sources of Polissya origin (дожчь, ражчньi). The letter combination дж, inherent in the modern literary language was not revealed in the texts of XIV – XV centuries, which confirms the thoughts of researchers about the later time of its introduction in writing. Certain examples of change are shown *zdj > жд, ждч, ждж (пригвождени, jбъεжъдчати, приє(ж)джали). The book spelling tradition during the late Middle Ages was firmly rooted in the minds of the scribes, however, the influence of the dialects of that time contributed to the development of the reflections that are reflected today in the phonetic system of the Ukrainian language.
