У статті авторка аналізує елементи епізації в драмі американського письменника китайського походження в контексті літературознавчої геронтології. В рамках дослідження дискурсу вікової динаміки старіння вивчається взаємодія сцен у ретроспективі (флешбеків) з подієвістю у теперішньому часі. Визначено, що архітектоніка п’єси-спогаду «М.Баттерфляй» Д.Г.Хуанга побудована на використанні фреймової конструкції «пунктирного обрамлення», зосередженої на репрезентації літнього протагоніста. Такий прийом сприяє зануренню головного персонажа у своє минуле, перегляд якого набуває вирішального сенсу та стає фінальним кроком у житті протагоніста. Також композиційними особливостями драми «М.Баттерфляй» Д.Г.Хуанга є безпосередні звернення протагоніста до аудиторії, прийом «п’єси-у-п’єсі» та симультанність дії. Авторка статті доводить, що поетику драматичного твору становлять інтертекстуальна основа та ейджистська ментальність.
The author of the article studies the dramatic structure of the play written by an American playwright of the Chinese origin in the context of literary gerontology. The subject of the paper is Hwang’s use of epic techniques to construct a lifelong story narrated by an aged protagonist. The goal of the present study is to define the specifics of drama’s composition which is traced in the epic theatre paradigm developed by B. Brecht. The discourse of the dynamics of aging is revealed in the interaction of the scenes in retrospect (flashbacks) with the scenes in present time. It is determined that the feature of the architectonics of the play “M. Butterfly” by D.H. Hwang is the use of a framed structure of “intrusive narrative”, which focuses on the representation of the aging protagonist. This technique promotes the immersion of the main character in his past. Life review becomes an animating force of the play leading to the protagonist’s suicide. The dramatic structure of “M. Butterfly” comprises speaking of the protagonist to the audience, “play-within-the-play” technique and simultaneous actions. In terms of poetics Hwang’s play employs intertextuality and the ageist remarks. The methods used in the paper are mixed: close reading, historical data processing, analyses of interdisciplinary resources (literary gerontology, social gerontology, theatre studies). The innovative solution lies in the application of interdisciplinary approach to close reading of drama texts. The results can be practical for classes of US literature and social gerontology. |
