Метою вивчення покупця є виявлення і детальне дослідження тих категорій споживачів, котрим адресована продукція фірми, а також їхніх звичок і мотивів, якими вони керуються у своїй поведінці на ринку. Дослідження такого типу передбачають аналіз основних суб'єктивних і об'єктивних чинників, що формують смак і надання покупцем переваги тому чи іншому товару. Вивченню підлягають демографічна характеристика покупців, розподіл прибутку, соціальні чинники, що впливають на поведінку даної групи населення, психологію. Ці напрямки аналізу звичайно об'єднуються в поняття "дослідження мотивацій". Таким чином, вивчення споживача припускає досить широке коло досліджень. Це вивчення покупців продукції фірми і дослідження чинників, що формують попит на даний товар.

Studies of this type include the analysis of the main subjective and objective factors that shape the taste and the buyer's preference for a particular product. These areas of analysis are usually combined in the concept of "motivation research". Thus, the study of the consumer involves a fairly wide range of studies.
