Based on a complex analysis of a wide range of archival, statistical, background materials, scientific publications, and church periodicals the research personified the largest priest families in Uman region. The representatives of these families created the golden fund of Ukrainian clerical elite and their selfless, preaching and educational activities contributed to the spiritual improvement of society. The thesis presents the biographies of beneficed clergymen families’ natives who rose the church hierarchy and played a prominent role in the Church history. Large priest families are shown to produce talented and highly educated creators of social and political life who could fully realise themselves in education activity and the civil service, organized regional movement, contributed to the accumulation of historical knowledge, and as educated members of that time society were closest to the people, deprived of education possibilities. It is proved that Orthodox beneficed clergymen being native citizens in Ukraine and living among rural people had a great influence on the preservation of national traditions and the revival of political life of XIX – the beginning of ХХ century unlike Russified leaders of the Orthodox Church. Outstanding personalities were born in such Uman families as Nesterovych, Oltarzhevskyi, Atanazevych, Povlovych, Molchanovskyi, Kryzhanovskyi, Dzbanovskyi, Govyadovskyi, Panasevych. These families not only continued the traditions of priest service, but also took care of education, culture, morale of village families and rural communities. 22 The Kryzhanovskyis’ dynasty was found out to be the biggest among studied Orthodox priest families. It consisted of 12 persons who were devoted to worship: Sava, Gregoriy Savovych, Ivan Grygorovych, Kharlampiy Ignatovych, Pavlo Mykytovych, Lavrentiy Mykytovych, Vasyl, Oleksandr Vasylyovych, Mykola Oleksandrovych, Apolinariy Yermolayovych, Yevfimiy Fedorovych. Next in number there were such families as the Dzbanovskyis – 11 clergymen: Ioann, Afinogen (Afanasiy), Andriy Afinogenovych, Mykola Andriyovych, Vasyl Andriyovych, Vasyl, Mykyta Vasylyovych, Gavriyil Mykytovych, Viktor Fedorovych, Tykhon Fedorovych, Luka; the Movchanovskyis – 6 clergymen: Vasil, Nykyfor, Porfyriy Nykyforovych, Grygoriy Nykyforovych, Andriy Porfyrovych, Mykola Porfyrovych; the Pavlovyches – 6 priests: Oleksandr, Mykhaylo, Prokopiy Mykhaylovych, Afanasiy, Luka, Mykhaylo Lukych. The Orthodox priesthood was reinforced by 5 members of Panasevych family (Moyisey Fedorovych, Mykhaylo Iakovych (Yakovych), Antoniy Yakovych, Petro Antoniyovych, Yevgen Antoniyovych), 3 persons of Govyadovskyi family (Mykhaylo Zinoviyovych, Afanasiy Zinoviyovych, Feodosiy) and 3 members of Atanazevych family (Fedir, Makariy Fedorovych, Ioann Makarovych). At that time among outstanding people there were 3 priests of Nesterovych family (Gavryyil, Ioann Gavryyilovych, Ioann (Iryney) Ioannovych), and 2 clergymen of Oltarzhevskyi family (Narkis Iustynovych, Petro Narkisovych). The research shows that at the beginning of XX century the outstanding representatives of Ukrainian intelligentsia were members of Uman priest families – followers of family traditions, active fighters for defending of the Orthodox faith, devotees of Ukrainian culture and science – Atanazevych Ioann Makarovych, Bogdanovych Sava Nykyforovych, Naselenko Pamfil Tymofiyovych, Grymalskyi Leontiy Stefanovych, Oltarzhevskyi Petro Narkisovych (Feodosiy Oltarzhevskyi), Nesterovych Ireney Ioannovych, Molchanovskyi Feodosiy Mykolayovych, Bilyashivskyi Mykola Fedotovych. They were highly educated, righteous persons having strong and firm characters and faith in spiritual perfection. Those people strengthened the ideals of good, Christian virtues, contributed to the social, political, national and cultural life and were known to be the representatives of Ukrainian elite’s golden fund. |
